FAQ
Who is eligible to apply for a CCW / CPL?
In general, any applicant who meets the following criteria "shall be" issued a Concealed Pistol License:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be a resident of Michigan
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien
  • Must provide proof of pistol training from a certified firearms instructor
  • Must NOT have a domestic violence conviction
  • Must NOT be currently subject to a Personal Protection Order
  • Must NOT have been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces
  • Must NOT have any felony convictions
  • Must NOT have any pending felony charges
  • Must NOT have certain misdemeanor convictions within either the 8-year or 3-year period prior to the time of application (see info on the Michigan State Police website)

Must NOT be subject to an order or disposition for any of the following:
  • Mental health order
  • Legally incapacitated
  • Involuntarily hospitalized
  • Been found not guilty by reason of insanity
Which class is the proper class to take for a CCW / CPL?
Per info on the Michigan State Police’s website, Michigan law requires that the class used for the purpose of meeting the pistol-training prerequisite for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL / CCW) must meet the following standards:
  • "Safe storage, use and handling of a pistol including, but not limited to, safe storage, use and handling to protect a child"
  • "Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting"
  • "Pistol shooting positions"
  • "Firearms and the law, including civil liability issues and the use of deadly force"
  • "Avoiding criminal attack and controlling a violent confrontation"
  • "All laws that apply to carrying a concealed pistol in this state"
  • "At least 8 hours instruction, including 3 hours of firing range time; which requires firing at least 30 rounds of ammunition"

Thus, it is important for a prospective CCW / CPL applicant to evaluate the agenda and syllabus of his intended firearm training service provider. For the record, the NRA’s "Personal Protection in the Home" class meets the aforementioned requirements. Furthermore, the state of Michigan requires that the class be taught by a certified firearms instructor. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is listed as a reference resource on the Michigan State Police website. All NRA-certified instructors have credentials from the NRA with their Instructor ID numbers, which can be verified to guarantee that a given person is qualified to train students.

Caveat Emptor: "Anyone who presents a certificate of completion to a gun board knowing the individual did not satisfactorily complete the course, is guilty of a felony punishable by 4 years in prison and / or a $2,500 fine."
Is your training service suitable for Macomb County CCW / CPL applicants?
Yes. Our training is valid for all of the 83 total counties in the state of Michigan. Also, unlike MCOLEs firearm instructors, an NRA-certified instructor is qualified to conduct gun safety courses in all 50 states of the United States.
How long is the CCW / CPL class?
By statute, the firearms training class must be at least eight hours in length. Any student who takes a training class that is less than eight hours in length and subsequently submits a certificate to a county gun board is guilty of a felony that is punishable by four years in prison and / or a $2,500 fine. Also, any instructor who bestows a certificate to a student who did not satisfactorily complete the class is also guilty of a felony and is subject to the same penalties.
How long does it take to get approved for a CCW / CPL?
Generally speaking, an applicant should allow two to three months for the entire process. In truth, some counties process their applicants more expediently than other counties. Moreover, some county gun boards still require applicants to appear before the county gun board, causing the total time required for the entire process to become relatively elongated.
Can I buy a gun without a CCW / CPL?
Yes. Assuming that you are not legally prohibited from buying or possessing a gun (e.g., having a felony), you merely have to visit your city's main law enforcement agency and request a 10-Day Purchase Permit at no charge. You may need to take and complete a short gun safety quiz. At this point, the agency will run a quick background check. If there are no issues, you will be issued the 10-Day Purchase Permit. With this permit, you must buy a gun within 10 days or you will have to repeat the prior steps.

If you are at least 18-years-old but less than 21 years of age, you can only legally buy a gun from a private seller. If you are at least 21 years of age, you can buy a gun from a federal firearms licensee (FFL), such as a gun shop. In any case, the seller will keep one part of the 10-Day Purchase Permit as part of the sales process. You will then properly transport your gun, along with the remaining two parts of the 10-Day Purchase Permit, to your local law enforcement agency within 10 days to have your gun safety inspected.
How do I legally transport my gun to the CCW / CPL class?
The proper way to transport a gun in your car, without a CCW / CPL, is to have the gun unloaded, separated from ammunition and locked in a gun case in your car's trunk. If you are bringing your gun to our training class, do not bring live ammunition inside to the classroom.
Do I have to own a gun before I take your CCW / CPL class?
No. You can inexpensively rent a gun at the target range. If you don’t have a pressing need to buy a gun before the class, wait until after you complete class before you make a gun purchase. We extensively cover the things that you need to be aware of to ensure that you buy the right gun for you and your needs.
Is there a dress code for your CCW / CPL class?
In general terms, there is no dress code. However, you need to ensure that you are comfortable. If possible, wear a long-sleeved shirt and avoid tops with a low neckline — hot shell casings may cause you some discomfort if they come in contact with your skin. Also, avoid wearing open-toed shoes.
Where do I apply for a CCW / CPL?
You apply at your respective county government office.
What are Pistol-Free Zones?
Pistol-Free Zones are places where people with restricted CCW / CPL licenses are not legally able to visit while armed with a pistol.

They include:
  • Casinos
  • Courtrooms
  • Hospitals
  • Daycare centers & schools
  • University classrooms & dormitories
  • Sports arenas
  • Entertainment facilities seating 2,500 or more
  • Churches (unless you have permission)
  • Establishments that earn over 50% of their income from the sale of alcohol-by-the-glass to be served on the premises

Note: Retired law enforcement officers with a CCW / CPL and Michigan licensed private investigators are exempt.
Note: The parking lots of the aforementioned Pistol-Free Zones are exempt.
